Austria Burgenland ~ Zantho
Philosophy Our objective is the production of high quality wines made from indigenous grapes in harmony with their environment. Only the best berries from selected and contractual bounded members are accepted and vinified. The focus lays due to the climatic conditions in the area on the production of red wines like Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch but also classic regional whites made of Grüner Veltliner, Muskat Ottonel and Sauvignon Blanc are produced. Our product range is crowned with sweet wines, which are according to the climatic conditions of the vintage Icewine, Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese. Our aim to promote the Austrian wines in the international wine-lovers-world is confirmed with an export-ratio of nearly 50%. 50%。 Winery The wines from ZANTHO are made in cooperation of Umathum winery and Wolfgang Peck from Winzerkeller Andau. History of Andau By the end of the 19th century, relicts from the Bronze Age (approx. 1000 B.C.), and urnal burial sites and coins dating back to the reign of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius were found in the Andau region. Throughout the time of the Roman empire until approximately 400 A.D., the Seewinkel was densely populated. Around 1600, hard times came upon the village. It was ravaged by the Turkish war, when it was repeatedly pillaged and plundered. During the 30-year war, financial straits drove King Mathew to pawn the community to the future counts of Harrach. The counts of Draskovitsch followed, who were greatly responsible for the upkeep of the church. During the 19th century, armies on their way through often set up camp on the plain. The population was also devastated during the same timeframe by several epidemics of cholera. It is also reputed that a terrible plague of grasshoppers destroyed the entire harvest in 1859. On January 12, 1863, Michael Peck planted the first grapevine in Andau. Large scale winegrowing didn't happen, however, until the end of the 1950's. Today, the majority of the people living in Andau (2,600 people) work in the field of agriculture, whereby the number of winegrowers is about equal to the number of farmers. The Region Andau is situated in the northern part of Burgenland, in the outermost east of the country, in a region called "Seewinkel" close to the Hungarian border. From Vienna, Andau can be easily reached by car in about 50 minutes via the motorway A4, Exit Mönchhof, heading to Mönchof, then Halbturn and finally Andau. Andau。 Soils of Andau Gravelly layers of soil that are often up to ten meters deep and embedded with large quantities of sand, and numerous pebblestones containing iron are factors that shape the terroir of northern Andau. The warmth of the sun is stored in the pebbles and released gradually, contributing to the optimal ripening of the grapes. In the south of Andau, layers of grey and green clay are found as deep as 1 ½ meters. In the 1920's and 1930's, the substantial local peat deposits were exploited for industrial purposes. The numerous small lakes around Andau indicate a high ground-water level, which is located just below the ground in the southeast. The ground-water runs four meters deep in the gravelly soil in the north and northeast. It is these areas that are most important for winegrowing. The "Blaue Zweigelt" flourishes on this soil, which instills the wines with intense mineral notes. The soil conditions are comparable with those in Graves in Bordeaux. Climate of Andau Andau is located in a climate-zone where ocean and continental weather conditions meet. It is windy 200 days of the year on average and the wind usually comes from the northwest or the southeast. In the summertime, the wind scatters dust and earth over the fields. In the winter, they are often covered by snowdrifts. The highest temperatures and the lowest precipitation rates in Austria have been recorded in Andau. Vineyards Every year, more than 50 selected and contractually bounded members of the Winzerkeller Andau produce under the quality control of Josef Umathum the grapes for the ZANTHO-Collection on slightly more than 70 hectares of best vineyards. An exactly defined minimum number of vines per hectare, as well as a strictly controlled canopy managment and a very strict yield limitation on about 6.000 kg per hectare guarantee for a constantly high quality. Harvest by hand is self-evident as well as the selection of rotten berries. Phytosanitary measures are only made when necessary and of course under protection of beneficial organisms. Quality and Zantho The Winzerkeller Andau und Umgebung, our partner winery next to Umathum winery in Frauenkirchen, as well as ZANTHO GmbH itself have been awarded at beginning of 2007 with the "International Food Standard" (IFS) on the "higher level" - the currently strictest quality security certificate in the worldwide food production - a logic step to guarantee constantly high quality with strictest control for our wines. ZANTHO belongs now to a small group of national and Europe wide wineries which took this laborious step voluntarily in order to provide highest product security. Each bottle is now monitored and has its own "curriculum vitae" and can therefore be traced back to the vineyards parcel. |
